How is the actuarial job market in Malaysia?

I have been asked on various occasions on the actuarial job market outlook in Malaysia in the current gloomy economic environment. As far as I know, one insurer embarked on VSS in 2008, at least one has frozen headcounts and quite a few have no vacancies at the present moment.

Employment market for fresh graduates continues to be bad, with more candidates chasing after limited vacancies. At TAS Search, we have also seen more candidates writing to us recently than in the past enquiring about job vacancies in the market. As a matter of fact, we recently filled a few vacancies at various levels without posting them on our website or sending emails to potential candidates. We filled the vacancies from those candidates who registered their interest with us in the past.

Having said that, there are still good news for candidates at the right levels. Currently, we are seeking actuarial candidates with 3 to 7 years work experience, nearly qualified actuaries and recently qualified actuaries with up to 3 years post qualification experience. Malaysians are preferred.
